Centre for Faculty Development
The CFD is a joint venture between the Faculty of Medicine and St. Michael’s Hospital. It focuses primarily on teaching, education, career development, and leadership development. It offers a very wide range of programs, from convenient one-shot opportunities to intensive courses:
Best Practice in Education Rounds (BPER)
- one-hour lectures that are videoconferenced (typically Tuesday at noon) and also webcast
- they are FREE and registration is required to receive Zoom information
Workshops
- usually 3-4 hours in length, on a variety of topics (e.g., Teaching 101, PowerPoint, Mentorship Skills, Promotion by Creative Professional Activity, etc.)
- they are FREE but registration is required (and many fill up)
Teaching for Transformation
- TforT is a suite of educational offerings, including the Online Supplements for Education, an annual summer event/institute, and custom consultations and programming.
Teaching for Learning and Collaboration (TLC)
- a specific six-workshop program that focuses on core teaching skills
- this is a good starter program for any Clinician-Teacher
- The TLC Program is currently undergoing a curriculum review and is on hold for 2021-2022
Stepping Stones
- a 40-hour (over two years) certificate program that combines a health professional education journal club (18 hours) with workshops selected from those on offer at the CFD those years
- registration fee
- this is a good next-step program for Clinician-Teachers, particularly those who may wish to explore the option of becoming an Clinician-Educator
Education Scholars Program (ESP)
- a half-day per week program over two academic years (summers off) that focuses on leadership development in health professional education
- tuition fee
- this is a good option for Clinician-Educators who may not want to do a Masters of Education
- can count as 4 credits towards the U of T’s Masters in Community Health Science – Health Professions Teaching Education
New and Evolving Academic Leaders (NEAL)
- a 12-day (three 4-day modules over one academic year) that focuses on developing academic leadership skills
- tuition fee
- this is a good option for faculty who are in mid to senior administrative positions
