PLEX - Personalized Learning Experience
Going forward at the University of Toronto’s Department of Psychiatry Residency Training Program the term Electives has been formally changed by the PRPC to the acronym PLEX (Personalized Learning Experience). The reasoning for this change is to reflect the changes to the elective offerings as the CBD Rotation Structure (Competency by Design) is being rolled out. With CBD, residents will have increased opportunities to explore the rich and varied possibilities that await them as members of the Psychiatry profession. In select years of training, time has been carved out for residents to navigate these opportunities based on their interests allowing them to personalize their residency experience and to shape themselves into the future Psychiatrists that they will become.
PLEX was also created as a way to support residents who need to demonstrate certain competencies without prolonging the overall duration of their training. Residents who require more opportunities to improve in a certain area, at the discretion of the program, may be asked to use PLEX time to sharpen particular skills to become truly world class physicians.

Northern Outreach Program
The Northern Psychiatric Outreach Program at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health – (NPOP-C)
The Northern Psychiatric Outreach Program at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, formerly known as the University of Toronto Psychiatric Outreach Program evolved from a 1993 Underserviced Area Program Committee. What began early in 1994 with consultation service to Kenora, Ontario, expanded in 1995 to include the sites of Parry Sound, Peterborough, Sault Ste. Marie, Sioux Lookout and Timmins, Ontario. Since 1999 NPOP-C has been a partner in the Ontario Psychiatric Outreach Programs (OPOP; see below). NPOP-C has continued to expand with over seventy faculty consultants, and serves communities throughout Ontario including Atikokan, Baffin Island, Elora, Fort William, Kenora, New Liskeard, North Bay, Parry Sound, Sault St. Marie, Sioux Lookout, Surbury, Thunder Bay, Timmins, and Wawa.
In addition, NPOP-C staff and consultants participate in the delivery of clinical and educational telemedicine services from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) to sites across Ontario, with priority given to Northern sites. This allows NPOP-C to complement fly-in/drive-in services offered to our partner communities as well as provide needed psychiatric consultations to more remote sites not served by visiting physicians. Connectivity and clinician fees for telemedicine are provided by the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN).
Education
NPOP-C electives are available in most northern sites that NPOP-C deals with. One month selectives are also available at some of the sites. Please contact Achira Saad, Education Coordinator (NPOP-C) at 416- 535-8501 or 416-535-8501 x34971 or via email achira.saad@camh.ca, if you are interested in completing an elective/selective at any one of the sites or require further information. The electives are an excellent opportunity for residents to gain one on one education and experience from consultants with University of Toronto faculty appointments. The Program also serves Baffin Island, Nunavut with monthly consultation visits and resident electives.
The Ontario Psychiatric Outreach Program (OPOP), formed in 1999, is a collaborative and dynamic network of dedicated academics and practitioners in the mental health field, sharing expertise and resources to deliver clinical services and education to Ontario’s rural, remote and under-serviced areas.
OPOP is committed to providing clinical service, education and support of the highest quality to communities throughout Ontario, particularly communities that are rural, remote or considered under-serviced in terms of mental health care. We will continually strive to provide multidisciplinary, contextually relevant, community-oriented service and education.
Currently, six university programs participate in the Ontario Psychiatric Outreach Program (OPOP), along with the Ontario Child and Youth Telepsychiatry Program. Programs are based at university departments of psychiatry.
The six university programs that fall under the umbrella of OPOP are:
- The Northern Psychiatric Outreach Program at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health – NPOP-C
- Extended Campus Program (ECP) University of Western Ontario
- McMaster University
- Northern Ontario Francophone Psychiatric Program (NOFPP)
- Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM)
- Queen’s University Psychiatric Outreach Program
