Dr. Paul Shuper is a Senior Scientist and Head of Community, Addiction and Mental Health Research & Evaluation in the Institute for Mental Health Policy Research at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto, Canada. He is also an Assistant Professor (Status Only) with the Department of Psychiatry and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto; a Research Affiliate at the Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention, and Policy at the University of Connecticut; and an Associate Member of Staff in the Mental Health, Alcohol, Substance Use and Tobacco Unit at the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC). His research primarily focuses on addressing the impact of alcohol, substance use, and mental health on the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, particularly HIV. Some of his current initiatives include 1) an NIH/NIAAA-funded trial that seeks to improve HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis outcomes by addressing underlying hazardous alcohol consumption, substance use, and depression through a brief e-intervention; 2) a CIHR-funded endeavour that focuses on methamphetamine initiation among sexual minority men in Ontario; and 3) a CIHR-funded initiative aimed at identifying means to address mental health and addictions concerns among youth living with HIV in Zimbabwe. Dr. Shuper has been conducting research in Sub-Saharan Africa since 2007, and his work in this region has included large-scale NIH- and SAMRC-funded intervention trials involving South Africans who are living with HIV. Based on his program of research, Dr. Shuper has served a scientific expert in the area of alcohol and HIV for the World Health Organization (WHO). In 2020, he received an Ontario HIV Treatment Network (OHTN) “Innovator” Award for his work in the field of HIV.
